ADULT SPIRITUAL FORMATION

Our prayers for you all: a holy Lent and joy in the redemption that Jesus has given to us. We are so thankful for this chapter to come during Lent.

One of the best scriptures we know on the practice of confession and receiving forgiveness is I John 1:1 through 2:2.  For next time, please read this passage carefully, at least twice.  Picture the apostle John talking to YOU!  Notice how John develops the amazing things that God has done for us in Jesus – from his own sight and touch to sharing it so that we can have fellowship together in Jesus, in joy.  That is the basis for our practice of confession – not to beat ourselves up, but to acknowledge our need and “walk in the light, as he is in the light”.  Notice, too, where he ends up:  “My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin.”

Please write down your reflections on this passage in light of the chapter we have read (perhaps re-read it for yourself – its short) and in light of the discussions we have already had about confession.  Perhaps a good question to ask ourselves as we look at this is:  Are we PLANNING not to sin?  If that is the outcome that Jesus forgiveness is to have, and then what is our part in that?  Notice, too, “If anyone does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense – Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.”  God is patient and forgiving and loving as we learn.

Tom Thompson will lead the class to consider the whole passage.  Let it soak in to you and then come prepared to share with others what God has said to you.
